Couture by Carolyn

This shoot was important to me. Partly because it was for my sister’s new line of dresses, and I’ve seen how hard she’s worked on them so wanted to do her justice, and also because I’ve been feeling really lost with photography lately. I wanted to use this as a chance to push myself, to not rely on methods I’ve grown to feel extremely comfortable with. That meant breaking out the flash.

Okay, let’s back up a minute and talk about my sister; a YouTube fashion guru and dress designer. Carolyn has been slaving over these designs for a while, and they’ll be going live on her shop over the next few weeks (I think, don’t quote me). This was the first time I’ve seen them, and I felt really proud. I have a talented sister.

Anyway, for me this brought back a lot of the excitement I have towards photography that was, for whatever reason, buried away recently. Maybe it was the location, the models, or the fact I was shooting something that important. I don’t know, who cares, I had fun. I love my camera.

  6. Ashley, your photo’s never fail to inspire me, I find that I keep coming back to your blog time and time again and that I always leave feeling that I need to just go out with my camera and photograph what I see. I never do this! I pick up my camera plenty of time for work and paid assignments but its rare these days that I ever pick up a camera just for the pleasure of having a camera in my hand and recording the things I see. I used to do as a teen when I first started shooting on film and just because I now work as a photographer why should it be any different? Its also inspired me to go out and shoot some naturally lit stuff instead of worrying about lighting and setting up rigs and getting a light meter out and my Elinchroms. These photos are definitely some of my favorite this year. Keep up the great work!
