York

On Sunday, I drove the 200+ miles to York for a photography job. I spent most of the day in Bytemark‘s office, meaning I got to see very little of the city for myself, but from what I did see, York is absolutely stunning in the autumn time.

I stocked up on an unusual array of beers (ones we can’t get in Glasgow, which is surprising given we’re known for our drinking), took a morning stroll along the canal, and generally marvelled at the beautiful buildings and quaint streets.

The following day I travelled to Manchester to visit Bytemark’s Mancunian office, but was met with horrendous weather. It’s only the second time I’ve visited Manchester, but both times I’ve …

My Two Loves

A deli board and red wine. I can’t imagine a better way to spend a Monday afternoon. This was taken a few months back, when my friend (Lindsay, pictured) and I visited Manchester for one day. We were on the hunt for a deli board and came across Wood, a deli and wine bar in The Northern Quarter. It was perfection. These were the only two frames I shot in Manchester. As much as I loved the food and drink, the city didn’t excite my eyeballs enough.

Sam + Trisha

Earlier this month, I traveled the furthest south I’ve been (in the UK) and photographed Sam and Trisha’s wedding in Lewes in sweltering heat no Weegie is prepared for. It feels cliche to say, but it really was a spectacular wedding. Lewes was a treat to photograph in, with quaint buildings and a castle nearby, and Sam and Trisha themselves were a beautiful couple. Imagine my delight when I turned up and was told the wedding was outdoors. Yas, natural light! This just doesn’t happen in Scotland.

Thank you, Sam and Trisha.

Ryan and Beth

When Ryan and Beth first approached me to photograph their wedding, I remember Ryan telling me it was going to be “really cool”. I wasn’t quite prepared for how cool. I think this is every wedding photographers’ dream; quirky venue (a teepee in the English countryside), beautiful couple, plentiful emotion amongst family and friends, and a striking attention to detail. It was difficult for me to whittle my photos from the day into a concise blog post, there was just so much to capture. I’m eternally grateful to Ryan and Beth for giving me the opportunity to be there, to be a part of their day. It was a wedding I’ll never forget.

Leeds

Leeds is a city I knew nothing about. Needing to escape for a couple of days, my friend – Harry – spent 48 hours introducing me to its array of indie coffee shops, great restaurants, and getting me into beer (albeit fruity, cherry flavoured beer) and gin. Not a particularly healthy few days, which is why I spent some money I’d earned on a Jawbone Up (already hit my 10,000 steps by 10am today. YALDI).

My favourite spots in Leeds;

Industry Conf

First of all, huuge thank you to Gavin for organising Industry, but for also having enough faith to put Miss Baxter (that’s me) on stage. A first time speaker talking about the insurance industry (paraphrased from James’ blog post), what could go wrong? I had a wonderful time at Industry; a more intimate conference with a varied selection of speakers (though, coincidentally, a few crossovers in themes throughout most of the talks).

I took something away from each of the speakers, ate delicious food, made new friends, had the tastiest coffee of my life, and generally felt pretty grateful all round. But the build-up to my first speaking gig was so horrid, I can’t imagine doing another! Gavin, on the other hand, should continue to organise conferences – he does such a great job. *hint, hint*

Kym ‘Krispy Kreme’ Ellis

Yesterday – after spending the weekend in England for a wedding I was shooting – I had the pleasure of trying my first Krispy Kreme doughnut and meeting Kym Ellis. Kym and I have tried to meet on a few occasions, but something always gets in the way (like January’s crazy blizzard). It was great to finally meet as we both love cameras, coffee and  – now that I’ve finally tasted ’em – Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I want to try them all. ALL OF THEM, I TELL YOU.

London

Earlier this week I was in London for business. Despite staying in Chelsea, which was pretty to look at, and being treated to a 3 course meal at The Fifth Floor (I would have loved to photograph my dessert, “Doughnut Funfair”), this was the only frame I snapped. Mark came with me as he’s pretty good at front-end development and procrastinating (only kidding, Mark). This was taken when we camped in Cafe Nero in Chelsea to get some work done.

On an unrelated note, head over to Kickstarter and check out Safelight, an app for photographers to proof and sell their work. It’s the fist Kickstarter project I’ve backed, and I really want to see it come to life.…

An Afternoon Being Tourists

After spending two days in the office, Mark and I broke free to indulge in some tourist activities around London. We only had one day, which I thought would be enough to fit in a few London landmarks, but because the city is so huge we spent most of it commuting from one location to another. Or so it felt.

Whilst my fleeting jaunt around London wasn’t fruitful for photos, it has certainly been an invaluable visit business wise. It looks like I may be returning to the capital a lot more, so there’s hope for her growing on me yet.

Lincoln

My friend Rick lives in Lincoln, and while he’d made the trip to Scotland twice to visit me, I had yet to return the favour. I got to meet his cats, play Portal 2 split-screen, drink coffee at Coffee Aroma, eat amazing sushi, take my first film shot, and have my picture taken for his Project 50 (anyone attempting a Project 50 should take heed from Rick of how to approach it… push yourself). Lincoln is a really pretty city, I’ll be back.
